Terry Hartwig: President, CEO, B.A., B Arch., Architect, AAA, MRAIC
Over the past 30 years, Terry Hartwig and Hartwig Architecture Inc. have been the design architects or prime consultants for more than 1000 projects. Terry says, “It is rewarding to head up this firm because I have the opportunity to do the best work possible, and the freedom to do it. We all love what we do, we have a passion for design excellence, and our work exemplifies that every day.”
Terry has been honoured with many design awards—his Commonwealth Stadium design being one of the first. When asked about his favourite or most exciting project, Terry says ‘I love them all, but actually, the most exciting project is always the next one!’
An exciting and more recent project is the “Edmontonian”, a 41 story condominium tower, designed for downtown Edmonton.
Station Point Greens is another inspiring project—a mixed-use development designed to have a net-zero carbon footprint. “Sustainability is simply good design; we practice good design by seeking technologically advanced solutions to meet the needs of our clients.” Terry’s commitment to sustainability resulted in a $480,000 research grant from CMHC and NRCanada to integrate new cutting edge design systems and concepts into this project.
As a youngster, Terry loved drawing and building things. While still in grade school, he read “The Living City” by Frank Lloyd Wright, and from that time on he knew he wanted to be an architect.
Terry’s other interests include furniture design, painting, building, pottery, home renovations, and reading.
In a recent interview, Terry reflected about a few of the reasons for the success of Hartwig Architecture:
On client relationships… “We recognize that good architecture fully meets the needs of the client. Everyone here believes in going the extra mile. I believe that’s why we have so much repeat business and why our clients give us so many referrals.”
On the Hartwig team… “I am so proud of our team. They are truly exceptional people—talented, committed, enthusiastic, hard working, and fun. Without their passion and ability we could not take on all these great projects.”
On the working environment…“I care about providing a great place to work—a place where our people have the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop to their full potential. I think it’s important that our corporate culture encourages our people to unleash the full measure of their creative power.”
